A very service-oriented regional structure
The Community of Madrid’s economy is strongly oriented toward the service sector, making up 79.8% of the Gross Value Added of the region.
The service sector detracted from the GVA’s growth in 2009 around 1.3 percentage points. However, it was the industrial sector that registered a less favorable contribution (-1.5 points) despite its lesser significance in Madrid’s economy.
During the 2000-2009 period, the relative importance of the industrial sector in Madrid’s economy decreased by 4 percentage points, whereas construction experienced an increase of 4 tenths of a point. The service sector grew 3.5%.
Tourism in the Community of Madrid
The year 2010 was a record-setting year for Madrid’s tourism sector under all categories.
• Record number of tourists, with nearly 10 million.
• Record number of overnight stays, with 18.6 million.
• Record number of international tourists, having received over 4.3 million.
• Record number of overnight stays by foreign tourists, with 9.2 million.
Madrid boasts the greatest average spending and average daily spending by tourists.
