Leading Region in R&D in Southern Europe
Madrid is Spain’s leader in scientific research and technological innovation. It is the region of Spain with the greatest R&D expenditure (27% of the total).
According to the report “Regional Penetration of the New Economy 2010” Madrid received a rating of 175 for technological innovation, 757 points above the national average. The Brief Regional Penetration of the New Economy Index positioned Madrid as the leader with 130 points, 30 points above the national average.
If we compare the regions of Spain to the 16 most important regions in Europe in technological innovation, only Madrid is comparable to the average of the most developed regions in Europe. The Community of Madrid also surpasses the European average in fields such as employment in intensively high-tech industrial and service sectors, in R&D and in number of researchers or in education- and training-related indicators.
The Community of Madrid is home to 14 universities with nearly 300,000 enrolled students and 21 educational centers run by the central government, 45 CSIC (Higher Scientific Research Council) centers and 1 regional administrative center.
Each year over 32,000 university students graduate in the Community of Madrid, 34% of which belonging to technical and experimental science schools.
