IMDEA Networks announces the celebration of the International e-Energy Conference 2012

    • E-Energy 2012, to be held in Madrid in May, will focus on areas such as communications infrastructure and servers, data centers, cloud computing and smart grid (smart grids).

Certain issues such as climate change and global warming are causing an increase in the concern about consumption and energy production. In this context, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role in introducing energy efficiency in our daily lives, and to optimize both production and transport and consumption of energy in many areas. However, the ICT infrastructure itself must become more energy efficient. With this in mind, IMDEA Networks Institute and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) announce the holding of e-Energy 2012, the Third International Conference on Future Energy Systems, which will become a meeting place for researchers, developers and professionals working in the fields of energy, information technology and communications, with the objective of addressing the latest research and to identify which direction to take in the future and what the main challenges are in R & D. The conference will focus on specific areas such as communications infrastructure and servers, services provided in data centers, end systems in environments (both domestic and office networks), broadband access, sensor networks, cloud computing, smart grids and future networks such as the Internet of Things. e-Energy 2012 also has the support of, among others, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and it is proposed it should become a scientific forum in relation to a recognized scientific forum for the development of computer technologies and ecological communication.

The conference, organized by UC3M and IMDEA Networks, will be held from May 9 to 11, 2012, in Madrid (Spain) as a continuation of previous editions held in April 2010 in Passau, Germany, and in May / June 2011 in the Columbia University in New York. Before the main conference there will be held, on May 8, the E2DC workshop, the 1st International Workshop on Energy Efficient Data Centres, and a meeting of COST Action IC0804 on Energy Efficiency in Large Scale Distributed Systems. The Call for Papers for this event closed on January 27 with the presentation of a significant number of publications. Some of the areas covered include: measurement and instrumentation of networks and computing with efficient energy use; profiling performance and energy metrics; benchmarks, interfaces and tools; the concepts of monitoring and management; protocols and energy-efficient networks; energy efficient wireless and wired networks; cloud computing; networking and peer overlays; smart grids; detection techniques and sensor networks to raise energy awareness; network equipment and energy efficiency, including switches, routers and transceivers; the challenges of energy efficiency in network security and computing; and future energy efficient architectures.

The 2012 e-Energy conference contributes to ongoing research in energy efficient materials carried out by the IMDEA Institute Networks, including studies aimed at creating communication systems and computers that are more energy efficient and to design ICT systems to improve both the production and distribution of energy in other areas. These investigations include the development of new algorithms to adapt the network infrastructure to changes in traffic demand over time, as well as the creation of protocols and algorithms specifically tailored to intelligent management systems such as Smart Energy Grids. It is also worth mentioning a research project currently underway at the Institute, called the Green Network. This project, carried out with the collaboration of several institutions in Spain, the United States and China, focuses on existing theories and techniques to reduce global energy consumption at the network level. Dr Marco Ajmone Marsan, Senior Researcher at the Institute, is also Co-President of the e-Energy General Conference, and Project Coordinator of TREND (Towards Real Energy-Efficient Network Design), a European Network of Excellence on Energy Efficient Networks, which is also a sponsor of the e-Energy Conference. TREND is a meeting point for relevant network players in Europe, including manufacturers, operators and research centers, which revolves around the design of future sustainable, scalable and energy efficient networks. Also, IMDEA Networks has launched, earlier this year, another project related to this field of research: Energy Efficient Networks. The main objective of the project is the design of algorithms and techniques to reduce energy consumption in communication systems, without impairing, significantly, the quality of service.
