The Unversity Hospital 12 de Octubre of Madrid has been recognized as the public health center with the best hospital management and innovation in the 9th edition of the Medical Economics Award 2012, thanks to the initiatives and innovations adopted last year to improve its management and quality of care provided to patients. Dr. Camilo Jose Vazquez has won the 3rd Medical Economics Articles Contest. The year 2011 was marked by the inauguration of the new Ambulatory Activity Center, the "Initiative for the Humanization of Assistance in Birth and Breastfeeding" award presented by UNICEF to the Maternity and Child Center, certification for the Neonatal Service as a training center in NIDCAP - international care for premature children - and the recognition of different national referral units. The Ambulatory Activity Center, eight floors and 63,448 meters squared, is devoted almost exclusively to outpatient medical care and has consultation and exploration services, day hospitals, radiology, rehabilitation, dialysis, ambulatory surgery and a large laboratory located in a nine-storey tower. These facilities are great improvements in health infrastructure, since the building is equipped with intelligent lighting, air conditioning and patient identification and guidance.
National benchmark in assistance
Currently, the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre is the first health center in Spain where, firstly, it has successfully implanted a permanent artificial heart in a 67-year-old, who was discharged just a month after the intervention, and secondly, the first child with biventricular circulation was born after aortic valvuloplasty was performed in the womb when it was only a 22 week old fetus.
Two other areas that have become highlights of this hospital are transplants and research. Year after year the October 12th consolidates its leadership position as far as transplant activity is concerned, as the Spanish hospital where more kidney transplants are performed, 149, and the highest number of donors received, 53. Similarly, a cooperation agreement was signed with the CRIS Foundation to foster research into hematological diseases.
They have all helped establish the October 12th as one of the most prestigious hospitals nationally and internationally because of its technological equipment, facilities and above all, the work undertaken by the 7,000 professionals committed to quality, efficient and effective care.
Literary creation
For his part, Dr. Camilo Jose Vazquez, a resident of psychiatry at the October 12, has received the award in the Young Doctors category of Medical Economics' 3rd Medical Articles Competition, with his story, El Evolutivo. This is an unpublished article that reflects professional aspects of the psychiatric ward, with a touch of humor and careful sensitivity.
